Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched SageMaker Studio Lab, a free machine learning (ML) platform designed for beginners. This new service provides users with the ability to build, train, and deploy ML models without requiring an AWS account, credit card, or prior cloud computing knowledge.

Key Highlights of SageMaker Studio Lab

  • No AWS Account Needed: Users can sign up with a separate account and start experimenting with ML.
  • Free Compute Resources: AWS provides 12 hours of CPU or 4 hours of GPU per session, with unlimited sessions.
  • Persistent Storage: Users get 15 GB of storage per project, and their progress is saved automatically when a session ends.
  • Based on JupyterLab: The service runs on open-source JupyterLab, making it user-friendly for learners.

Currently available in public preview, SageMaker Studio Lab is part of AWS’s broader initiative to make AI and ML more accessible.

AWS Disaster Response Hackathon & Guinness World Record Attempt

To showcase the capabilities of SageMaker Studio Lab, AWS has launched a Disaster Response Hackathon, encouraging developers to build ML solutions for disaster preparedness and relief. The competition, running until February 7, 2022, offers $54,000 in prizes and aims to set the Guinness World Record for the largest machine learning competition.

$10 Million AWS AI & ML Scholarship Program

AWS is also investing in the future of AI and ML talent with a $10 million scholarship program. The AWS AI & ML Scholarship targets high school and college students from underserved communities to help them pursue careers in artificial intelligence.

  • Education Through AWS DeepRacer: The program uses AWS DeepRacer and DeepRacer Student League to teach machine learning fundamentals.
  • Nanodegree Scholarships:
    • 2,000 students will receive scholarships for AI Programming with Python (Udacity Nanodegree).
    • The top 500 students will advance to a second Nanodegree in Deep Learning and Machine Learning Engineering.
  • Mentorship Opportunities: The top 500 students will get exclusive access to mentorship from Amazon and Intel experts.

AWS is also offering free ML model training and educational resources as part of this initiative.

Final Thoughts

With the launch of SageMaker Studio Lab, AWS is making machine learning more accessible and beginner-friendly than ever. Combined with its scholarship programs and hackathons, the company is investing in the next generation of AI talent while expanding the reach of ML tools to a broader audience.
