Assassin’s Creed Shadows Review: A Powerful Comeback Now!

Published

on

Big, impressive landscapes and structures are Shadows‘ forte. Image via Ubisoft,

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows is more than just another game in the long-running series—it’s a bold triumph that finally brings everything fans have been asking for into one unforgettable experience.

A Welcome Shift Toward Real Assassin’s Gameplay

For years, Assassin’s Creed tried to become a massive RPG. Skill trees, loot grinding, and bloated maps made stealth feel like an afterthought. That’s fine for some—but many longtime fans (like me) missed the tension and thrill of hiding in plain sight.

Shadows brings back what truly matters: stealth, speed, and smart strategy. It feels like a real assassin game again—and that alone makes it special.

Two Heroes, Two Very Different Styles

For the first time since Syndicate, Shadows offers two main characters: Naoe and Yasuke. And they don’t just look different—they play like opposites.

  • Naoe is fast, quiet, and deadly. She’s a classic stealth assassin, slipping through shadows and striking from the dark. Playing as her feels sharp and thrilling.
  • Yasuke is a powerhouse. He takes hits, breaks guards, and clears out groups with crushing power. He’s not sneaky—but he is incredibly fun.

Switching between them gives you control over how you want to play. It’s a clever system that keeps the action fresh.

Assassin’s Stealth is Back—and It’s Better Than Ever

This is where Shadows really shines. The stealth in Assassin’s system is smart, exciting, and full of choices. You can crawl beneath buildings, hide in tall grass, and use the new light-and-dark system to plan perfect kills.

There’s no bird’s-eye view to reveal every enemy ahead of time. You have to think, act, and adapt. That sense of real danger is back—and it’s awesome.

The game’s level design is tight and full of variety. Whether you’re sneaking through castles or moving through forests, there’s always more than one way to reach your goal.

Combat Feels More Real and Rewarding

The combat in Shadows in Assassin’s Creed is a big step up. Timing, positioning, and weapon choice matter. Yasuke’s heavy attacks feel crushing, while Naoe’s quick moves demand precision.

There’s a wide mix of weapons—from katanas and rifles to the insanely fun kusarigama. The game wants you to learn, to time your parries, and to earn your victories. It’s not just button mashing anymore—it’s a test of skill.

A Gorgeous World That’s Actually Worth Exploring

Shadows’ world feels alive and meaningful. Unlike the empty spaces in Odyssey or Valhalla, this map invites you to explore without overwhelming you.

You can:

  • Clear enemy camps
  • Meditate at scenic spots
  • Draw wildlife
  • Customize your hideout
  • Or just wander through nature

The game’s visuals are beautiful from afar, with cinematic flair that pulls you in. Think classic samurai films—with bold colors, slow-motion effects, and dramatic camera angles that add real emotion to each scene.

The Story Has Highs and Lows

The story mixes history, mystery, and some of that classic Animus weirdness. While it’s mostly engaging, some parts feel a bit rushed—like how quickly Naoe and Yasuke become allies. It works, but it doesn’t always hit as hard as it could.

Still, the missions are fun, the pacing is good, and there’s enough heart in the narrative to keep you going.

A Few Flaws, But Nothing Game-Breaking

Not everything in Shadows is perfect. On close view, some textures and facial animations are a little rough—especially on lower-end consoles like the Xbox Series S. You might spot a few blocky trees or stiff expressions.

But the gameplay is so smooth and exciting, it’s easy to forget these minor flaws. The emotional impact and gameplay quality far outweigh any technical limits.

Final Thoughts: Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a Must-Play

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a powerful return to what made this series great. It’s stealthy, stylish, and satisfying—blending old-school AC tension with modern action and deep gameplay systems.

Whether you’re a loyal fan or someone new, this game is well worth your time. It’s not just another RPG pretending to be an assassin story—it’s the real deal.

TL;DR – Should You Play Shadows?

✅ Yes, if you love smart stealth gameplay
✅ Yes, if you want a world that respects your time
✅ Yes, if you’re a fan of the series’ roots
❌ Maybe not, if you need perfect visuals or deep character writing

Rating: 9/10 – A bold, emotional, and unforgettable chapter in the Assassin’s Creed saga.
